CALIFORNIA MISSION PROJECT
DUE February 17, 2009
Materials: Each student will be given a file folder and two index cards. Colored pencils or crayons will be used for the project----NO MARKERS. The student will obtain materials for the project. Both the library and the Internet should be used for research.
- Students will select a California Mission to make. Every child will have a different mission. Their mission choice must be OK’d by the teacher no later than January 9, 2009.
- Students will gather information about their project, including facts such as the year it was built, purpose, location, and any facts of historical significance concerning their mission.
- The front cover of the folder should feature the name of the mission at the top, a drawn, photocopied, or Internet picture of the mission in the center, and the name of the student at the bottom.
- The inside of the folder will contain a two-paged typed report on the mission, using information as specified in guideline #2. The report may be single or double-spaced, using not larger than 16 pt. Font, and should be attached to the folder using an adhesive such as rubber cement or a glue stick. NO ELMER’S GLUE.
- On the back of the folder students will mark on a map of California, the location of their mission. The map should be colored and labeled. MAPS WILL BE PROVIDED.
- On one of the index cards, write a bibliography at the top and record all of your resources. This will include the title of the book, author, publisher, and copyright date. For Internet pages the URL must be included.
- On the other index card, write key words or phrases to help you give an oral presentation of your project---otherwise known as speech notes.
- A model of your mission should be constructed of clay, wood, Styrofoam, leather, grass, rocks, fabric, or a kit. Feel free to look for a kit (Michael’s Craft Store carries these) or be creative and come up with your own.
- Oral presentations and project display will be Feb. 18, 19, and 20. Each student will share their project and give a speech about it. Each student needs to be prepared to answer questions from the class.

Additional extra credit points will be given for having the mission OK’d by the due date (5 pts) and for completing the project on time (5 pts).
Missions will be on display for the Open House on Feb. 19 and 21.

Second Grade News
The Christmas Program is Thursday. Children are to meet in their classroom at 6:30pm. The Christmas Program will begin at 7:00pm.
Second graders will be having a Christmas Pizza Party on Friday. Dismissal on Friday is at 12:00 pm.
Chapel will be on Friday this week. We are asking children to bring a new, unwrapped present for their offering.

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM: Parts of the Christmas Program have been sent home. Please help your child with their part or with learning the words to the songs. The program is scheduled for Dec. 18, 2008 at 7pm. Please have your child here at 6:30pm. They will meet in their classrooms to dress for the program.
"The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" movie will be shown next week. Please sign and return the permission slip to watch this movie.
Noon Dismissal on Friday, December 19. School resumes January 5, 2009.
All students are invited to bring a new, unwrapped toy for a child in need. The toys will be brought to chapel on Friday morning as an offering.
Class Party: Please send $4 per student to cover the cost of soda, pizza, plates, napkins, and a treat for our Christmas Party. This will be held at 11:00 on Friday, December 19.
February Class Projects: Information will be going home for those wanting to use the holiday vacation time to work on the upcoming class project. Grades 3 and 4 will be required to write a report, give an oral presentation, and make a California Mission. Students will be able to choose their mission on a first come, first serve basis. Information will be sent home on Monday December 14. These projects will be displayed for the February Open House.

Mrs. Maxwell's Jr. Kindergarten Class: December 8th, 2008.
Notes from Teacher : This Friday is our Christmas Lunch celebration for the whole school. The Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarteners will be making Christmas sugar cookies in class for this special lunch. We are excited. Chapel this week will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. by Pastor Brown. Please bring in tithing Tuesday instead of Wednesday, thank you. *Just two more empty/clean spaghetti jars are needed for our class family Christmas gifts projects.
Letter of the week: (Bb) we will cut and paste word pictures that begin with letter B, trace and handwrite letter (Bb). .
Books: “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See?” “Brother Bear,” “Little Bear,” books, and “The Wind Blew.”
Math: Creating even layers of dry beans, playing the Cotton Ball game of counting, and counting and writing out amounts of bees and gum balls seen in diagrams.
Large motor: Outdoor play with tricycles, running and skipping, and indoor exercise games with Smart Moves music (Build a Bridge) and Pass the Button circle game.
Small motor: Coloring and cutting for letter (Bb). With sugar cookie dough, roll out and make Christmas cookies. With flat butter knife, spread on frosting, and then sprinkle on decorations. The children will continue their advent chains, gluing and holding paper strips and make their wish list by cutting out advertisements.
God’s Word: Story: “Jesus is Born”
Memory verse for the Kindergarten class is “Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”
Music: Christmas program songs will be taught Monday through Friday at 9:30 a.m. *Our Christmas program is next week, the evening of December 18th, at 7:00 p.m.. Please mark your calendar, thank you.
Spanish: Will be taught 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. Monday morning with Ms. Rosa.
