The second graders did a wonderful job singing at Sunday’s church service. Thank you for coming and sharing their joy and enthusiasm for Christ.
Red Ribbon week starts this Monday. On Friday afternoon, we will have a costume ball. Each grade is asked to bring a different red food item; second graders are to bring individual red Jell-O cups.

Due to a 100% lack of participation in bringing $4 for treat sale on Friday, the 3/4 treat sale was cancelled. This money is used for classroom reading books, art supplies, and other "extras".
First Lutheran students will say "no" to drugs during Red Ribbon Week, which will take place from Oct. 28-31, culminating in a Costume Ball on October 31. Students will come to school in uniform and change into a costume in the afternoon. In compliance with administrative guidelines, no witches, ghosts, devils, or horror characters will be allowed. Our students will enjoy eating red food items at the ball, with each class providing part of the menu. Please bring the following: 6th~chips with salsa; 5th~red fruit (red apples, grapes, watermelon); 4th~cherry tomatoes, red bell peppers with ranch dip; 3rd~8-10 red juice boxes
IMPORTANT: Please send one small pumpkin with your child on Friday for our art pumpkin carving class. We will not have any extra pumpkins!!! Also, send a small box (shoebox or even a kleenex box) for a dancing spider art project.

This Tuesday is Shakey’s Pizza Night. Come join us for pizza and fun. Shakey’s will donate 25% of your food purchases to the school.
Sunday, October 26, Jr.K-2 grade will sing at the 8:30 am church service. This event is mandatory. If your child is unable to attend his/her Music and Religion grades will be lowered.

Notes from Teacher: This Tuesday is a school fundraiser at Shakey’s Pizza, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Also, we are assigned to come to the Sunday church service. The children, Jr. K. – 2nd grade will sing praise together at the beginning of church service, 8:30 a.m. They come dressed for church, no school uniforms are necessary. They have practiced together twice a week for this day. I hope to see all of you, thanks.
Books: I encourage children to bring in books that are about friendship and helping others for our social studies unit.
Social Studies: Myself and Others unit continues with their reflection on how others help them at home and in the classroom.
Math: Reviewing number sequence 0-6 through matching and counting in sets. Letter of the week is “Ii.” We will cut and paste word pictures that begin with letter “Ii” , trace and handwrite letter “Ii” and create their own island for letter “Ii.”
Large motor: recess play outside and circle games inside to music.
Small motor: A continual use of scissors, pencil, paint brushes and crayons. God’s Word: The story of “Gideon,” Judges 6-7, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart,” Proverbs 3:5.
Upcoming School Events: If you missed the parent teacher conference, please come see me and reschedule. Red Ribbon Week begins the following week. We are assigned to bring paper plates, napkins, and plastic ware for 60 people, October 31st. The children will also get to dress up the last part of the day for Halloween, nonscary. I will bring red cups for a fence display the upper grades will do for the whole school for the beginning of Red Ribbon WeekJ

Second Grade News October 13
I want to thank Mr. Geare and Mrs. Marshall for driving to and chaperoning our field trip last Friday. We had lots of fun at the pumpkin patch. The highlight was choosing a pumpkin to take home. The second grade class also received a large classroom pumpkin; one lucky second grader will win it on October 30.
Thank you also to all who donated money for the treat sale last Friday. The profit was $22.

Mrs. Maxwell's Jr. Kindergarten Class: Oct. 13-17th
Notes from Teacher: Parent teacher conferences are this Thursday and Friday, half day schedule. Each conference is 20 minutes long. The children will be let out at noon. There will be no hot lunch Thrusday and Friday. Please pack a sack lunch and a snack if your child is staying for daycare.
Books: I encourage children to bring in books that are about friendship and helping others. For Letter “L” we will read the classics, “Little Lambkin and Three Little Pigs.”
Social Studies: Myself and Others unit continues. Children are sharing self made pictures about the fun they have together when we go on field trips and what their favorite activity at school is.
Math: introducing number 6, number sequencing 0-6 and adding to Our Class Dot Book. A new math puzzle set will be introduced.
Letter of the week is “L.” We will trace and cut our hand print to create a lamb with cotton balls and cut a paste word pictures that begin with letter “L”. For fun, anybody looking for letter “L” may find a lollipop each day.
Large/motor: Outdoor play and circle games with music inside, and learning how a relay works. Small motor activities: Cutting and gluing through art, printing and painting, tracing & cutting and creating supportive pictures with crayons, colored pencils and markers.
Spanish: they are having fun with Bingo as they get more familiar with newly learned vocabulary.
God’s Word: Into the Promised Land. “Remember the wonders God has done.” 1 Chronicles 16:12.
Upcoming School Events: Next week, Tuesday, Oct 21st, we have a school fundraiser at Shakey’s Pizza in Burbank on San Fernando Rd. from 5.p.m. to 8 p.m.
*Thank you Maureen and Rosa for attending this fun trip to the Underwood farm with us. We had an amazing time in the corn maze, seeing the beautiful farm sights on a tractor wagon, finding our pumpkins in the pumpkin patch and feeding the farm animals.
*Soon I will post the photographs from the pumpkin patch. Come see our big pumpkin and take a guess on how much it weighs. We will weigh it next week.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be Oct. 16 and 17. Grades 3/4 will conference with Mrs. Chzran and grades 5/6 will conference with Ms. Sorensen. If you have not all ready done so, please see one of us to set up your conference time.
Oct. 16 and 17 are both noon dismissal. No hot lunch will be served. EDC will be open for those needing extended care. Please pack a snack and your child's lunch for those days if they are staying for after school care.

Books reports start this week. Each student must choose a book that is at least 25 pages or more and complete a book report form by October 30.
This Friday is our field trip to Underwood Family Farm. Students must wear their red logo shirts and bring a sack lunch.
Second grade will be hosting the treat sale on Friday. We will be serving popcorn balls and juice. I am asking for a $4 donation per student to help purchase the treats and cover the cost of their treat on Friday. Our treat sale in September resulted in a profit of $26. So far, this is how I have spent the money:
$2 to prchase plants for science experiment
$6 for supplemental election materials
$12 for filters and fish food.

Notes from Teacher: Please sign up for parent teacher conferences. It is posted on the door. The children enjoyed getting their fall into reading awards last week. This Monday will be celebrating David’s birthday in the afternoon. Jr. K. is excited to give him a birthday book they made him last Friday.
Books: I encourage books to come in that are about pumpkin patches, friendship and helping others. Other books will be about Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Great Pumpkin Patch and 1 Fish, 2 Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, and more.
Social Studies: Myself and Others unit has begun. We are learning about self and others through share time and group art. Come see our group art on self and others; we look fabulous! Math: introducing number 5, recognizing 0-5, and creating a picture with 5 dots. The children will also count out seeds on their created pumpkins.
Letter of the week is “S.” We will cut and paste a picture of Snoopy, along with pictures that begin with S. Air stroke letter S with clothespin, then trace S and write S. We are also reviewing letter formation using shaving cream, letters O, C, G, D, A and S. Children are also rewarded when they unscramble their name.
Large/motor: Outdoor play and circle games with music inside, and learning how a relay works. Small motor activities: Cutting and gluing through art, painting and printing. Drawing in the lines and creating supportive pictures.
Spanish: with Rosa, they are learning to name animals, say colors and count numbers in Spanish.

Upcoming School Events: This Friday is our pumpkin patch field trip. Please fill out permission slip and turn it in. We are driving in cars, so please have a car seat for your child.
