Curriculum
Here is a brief description of the curriculum covered in our developmental Kindergarten program during the course of the school year.
Calendar: Months of the year, days of the week and date of the week. Discussing weather and learning weather words.
Reading: Through the use of letterbooks, the students will learn to recognize and write alphabet letters, as well as learn the sounds of them. Students will be exposed to beginning reading skills through the use of stories in the letterbooks.
StoryTime: Using the big books, audiotapes, and flannel board stories, students experience stories in a variety of ways and develop pre-reading skills.
Math: Using unit based workbooks and hands-on materials, students are exposed to sorting skills, geometric shapes, patterns, graphing, spatial relationships, money, time, addition and subtraction. Number skills include: counting to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Writing numbers 0-100. Number set recognition to 25. Grouping ones and tens.
Social Studies & Science: Activities and mini-units for these two subjects are completed throughout the year: such as Families, Friendship, Pilgrims & Indians, Famous People, Pumpkin growth and Weather. Weekly Reader magazine is included as part of our science and social studies curriculum.
Art: Students will learn basic art concepts, including primary and secondary colors, by doing simple artwork.
Music: Instruments are use to teach basic music rhythms, tonality and pitches.
Rhythm & Movement/Physical Education: Through the use of songs and C D’s, exercises are planned that work on gross motor skills, especially jumping, galloping, skipping, running, and hopping. The balance beam is used to master skills such as forward, sideways and backward movements.
Computer Literacy: Typing tutor, keyboard familiarization and educational computer games.
Bible stories: The stories are presented to the students with songs, poems and activities that correspond to each story weekly. A short memory verse is learned each week.
Parent - Teacher Communication
A newsletter is sent home highlighting the special events and explaining what lessons are being covered.

I am a graduate of Concordia University, NE where I received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, with an emphasis in Physical Education.
I have 22 years of teaching experience, of which 7 have been here at First Lutheran.
