Mrs. Maxwell's Jr. Kindergarten Class, November 9th, 2009
Notes from the Teacher: Thank you all for remembering to bring in your teddy bears last week; we had fun at our teddy bear tea party. We did, however, miss David and Ashley who were out ill this last week; and later, Sona and Ciara, too. I hope all are feeling better. This week is busy and fun. Friday the children will do their Mexican Hat Dance at the Fiesta Dinner Friday night. I hope to see you all there. Wednesday is Veteran’s Day and there will be no school that day. Thursday we will have a friendship salad for letter F that also goes with our friendship themed books this week. Please turn in any Dog Gone Good Reader sheets, the children get stickers for reading with you at home. Rewards go home soon.
Letter of the week is (Ff)
Books read: “The Very Lonely Firefly,” “Sam and the Firefly,””Frog and Toad &Friends,” and, “1Fish, 2Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.”
Math: Read “My Ten Dots.” Create their own 6 dot picture. Place 6 paper feathers into a “turkey” pinecone and count with me, reading “1Fish, 2Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.”
Small motor: Trace big F and lower case f, color, cut and glue word pictures for letter (Ff), and create a jar of fireflies. When time permits, cut out colorful turkey feathers of what they are thankful for this Thanksgiving, displaying them in pine cones.
Large motor: Outside play with tricycles, running and digging and splashing with the sand and water tables. Circle games: Pass the Ball, Show me your Colors, and continue learning the Mexican Hat Dance.
God’s Word: 1 Samuel 1-2, “The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up.” 1Samuel 3:19
Social Studies: The children will practice and finish up their Mexican Hat Dance and costumes for the Fiesta Dinner this Friday night. Hope to see you all there.
Spanish: Ms. Rosa will teach in our classroom Monday morning, 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. *Working on greetings, colors and counting 1-10, the Mexican Hat Dance, and new vocabulary words.
Music: 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Tues. & Thurs. The children begin songs for the Christmas performance.

· Wednesday- no school for Veterans ‘Day
· This Friday, November 13th, is our Silent Auction- Fiesta Dinner, buy your tickets.
· Nov. 17th Signature Fundraiser will be delivered to the school for pick up.
· Nov. 20th Thanksgiving Dessert in the Fellowship Hall after lunch.

Curriculum
Our Pre-K programs explore these concepts, but are not required to master them before entering Kindergarten. Children learn these concepts at their own pace. Children are taught with hands on materials.
Math: numbers 1 – 10, counting objects to 10, sorting, patterns: AB, AABB, sizes, shapes, matching, same and different, more, less, same. Time: day and night.
Literacy: Exposure to alphabet, letter names and sounds, learn to recognize and spell first name, hold pencil, marker, crayon correctly, repeat simple nursery rhymes and finger plays, direction, left to right. Build new vocabulary, build listening skills, develop fine motor skills, play dough, scissors, writing utensils, legos, etc.
Science: explore science tools: magnets, prisms, magnifying glasses, etc. Natures, gardening, observe insect life, plant growth, and weather and plant life. Cooking activities, basic colors and explore color mixing. Explore the world with the five senses; learn about animals, their homes and the food they eat.
Creative Arts: Painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, etc. use different art materials: crayons, tempera paint, watercolor paint, colored pencils, markers, chalk and clay. Sing songs with movement and dances, use carves and other objects to practice rhythms, dramatize familiar stories, act out movements and sounds of animals.
Social Skills: Practice problem-solving skills in social situations, work in groups or with a partner, sharing, practice using manners: please, thank you, and excuse me.
Jesus Time Listen to Old and New Testament Bible stories, Recognize that God created families to love and take care of one another. Learn about God’s love, listen to stories of the life of Jesus, learn Jesus’ teachings to love God and love others

Mrs. Maxwell
I am Renee Maxwell, the Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten teacher. The children call me Mrs. Maxwell. I grew up in Mission Viejo, CA and graduated from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in Child Development. My passion has always been to teach the joy of learning through nurturance and letting each child know the love of Christ in their day.
This will be my eleventh year teaching. I have had the honor of teaching second grade for seven years at American Lutheran Elementary School in Burbank; and two years, prior, as their computer teacher for the 4th, 5th and 6th graders. However, I started at American Lutheran teaching with the Kindergarten classes and am delighted to be working with the young again here at First Lutheran in Burbank.
My husband and I met at Chico State and raised two children together, who now have gone off to college at the Naval Academy. After a lot of travel supporting them their first academic year, I longed to get back into teaching. I was an active parent, into marching band, water polo, swim, and many camp outs and hikes with the boy scouts. I love the outdoors, hikes and walks with my dog and visiting my family. I am a “doer.” I will be working hard to make each day fun in the classroom and on the yard for your children.
