Notes from the Teacher: Thank you, parents, who all came and helped with the field trip last Thursday. This Friday is school picture day in the morning and at the end of that day, it’s our turn to after school snack sale. *Fall into Reading Awards go home this Friday. For October, the reading board is now, Dog Gone Good Readers. Thanks for reading with your childJ
Letter of the week (Dd): Hearing stories and words with letter Dd; and for fun, taste donuts for letter Dd and “dig” out chocolate chips in a cookie for letter Dd, and count how many found. Books read: “The Ugly Duckling,” “Five Little Ducks,” “Make Way for Ducklings,” and “Ten Black Dots.”
Math: With the book, “Ten Black Dots” use 3 dots to create their own use of 3. Count forwards and backwards with the book, “Five Little Ducks.” If time permits, paint their five little ducks’ scene.
Small motor: We will cut and glue word pics for letter Dd and color and paint a duck. Air motion letter Dd, use the wipe on wipe off board and trace big Dd. Large motor: Outside play with tricycles, running and digging and splashing with the sand and water tables. *under the sea creatures will be added to the water tables, cool! Inside circle games will be “Duck, Duck, Goose,” and “Freeze Dance,” for letter D.
God’s Word: Story: “Moses Leads God’s People.” We will be learning about how God is good and cares about all our needs and provides for us. Memory verse: “God cares for you,” 1 Peter 5:7
Songs: God is So Good and Praise Him.
Social Studies: Unit 2, Being a Good Citizen: the importance of rules in the community; and also, hearing the Ten Commandments and how God’s word helps us too.
Spanish: Ms. Rosa will teach in our classroom this Monday morning, 8:45 to 9:15 a.m.
Music: 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Tues. & Thurs.
Reminder: This Friday, October 2nd, is School Picture Day and our first Jr. K. after school snack, 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. Please bring in $4.00 beginning of the week; so as a class, we can buy and prepare a snack to sell for the whole school. The four dollars will cover your child’s snack as well. *If there is anybody interested helping make or selling the snack, let me know. Thank you.

Curriculum
Our Pre-K programs explore these concepts, but are not required to master them before entering Kindergarten. Children learn these concepts at their own pace. Children are taught with hands on materials.
Math: numbers 1 – 10, counting objects to 10, sorting, patterns: AB, AABB, sizes, shapes, matching, same and different, more, less, same. Time: day and night.
Literacy: Exposure to alphabet, letter names and sounds, learn to recognize and spell first name, hold pencil, marker, crayon correctly, repeat simple nursery rhymes and finger plays, direction, left to right. Build new vocabulary, build listening skills, develop fine motor skills, play dough, scissors, writing utensils, legos, etc.
Science: explore science tools: magnets, prisms, magnifying glasses, etc. Natures, gardening, observe insect life, plant growth, and weather and plant life. Cooking activities, basic colors and explore color mixing. Explore the world with the five senses; learn about animals, their homes and the food they eat.
Creative Arts: Painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, etc. use different art materials: crayons, tempera paint, watercolor paint, colored pencils, markers, chalk and clay. Sing songs with movement and dances, use carves and other objects to practice rhythms, dramatize familiar stories, act out movements and sounds of animals.
Social Skills: Practice problem-solving skills in social situations, work in groups or with a partner, sharing, practice using manners: please, thank you, and excuse me.
Jesus Time Listen to Old and New Testament Bible stories, Recognize that God created families to love and take care of one another. Learn about God’s love, listen to stories of the life of Jesus, learn Jesus’ teachings to love God and love others

Mrs. Maxwell
I am Renee Maxwell, the Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten teacher. The children call me Mrs. Maxwell. I grew up in Mission Viejo, CA and graduated from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in Child Development. My passion has always been to teach the joy of learning through nurturance and letting each child know the love of Christ in their day.
This will be my eleventh year teaching. I have had the honor of teaching second grade for seven years at American Lutheran Elementary School in Burbank; and two years, prior, as their computer teacher for the 4th, 5th and 6th graders. However, I started at American Lutheran teaching with the Kindergarten classes and am delighted to be working with the young again here at First Lutheran in Burbank.
My husband and I met at Chico State and raised two children together, who now have gone off to college at the Naval Academy. After a lot of travel supporting them their first academic year, I longed to get back into teaching. I was an active parent, into marching band, water polo, swim, and many camp outs and hikes with the boy scouts. I love the outdoors, hikes and walks with my dog and visiting my family. I am a “doer.” I will be working hard to make each day fun in the classroom and on the yard for your children.
