Mrs. Maxwell's Jr. Kindergarten Class- December 1st- 5th
Notes from Teacher: I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. The children had fun at the school Thanksgiving feast and making their crafts.
Christmas is now approaching. Please bring in an empty clean spaghetti jar. The children will be making a family gift. We will begin a new reading theme, Light up with a Good Book. Reading awards for November will go home Friday.
Books: “Little Visits with God,” Angel Helpers, “The Ugliest Dog In The World,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Mixes Up Chameleon,” “The Crippled Lamb,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and “Voyager” so the children can see the universe (Uu).
Science: An experiment in buoyancy , displacing greater density.
Math: Adding to 3, using numbers 1 and 2; using finger play songs and hand crafts. Memory games will also be played to see who can remember what is “under” the cloth.
Letter of the week: (Uu) we will cut and paste word pictures that begin with letter U, trace and handwrite letter U. Word use: over, under, upside down, inside out, around and through.
Large motor: Outdoor play with tricycles, running and skipping and indoor exercise games with Smart Moves music.
Small motor: Art projects for letter U, coloring in the lines and cutting & gluing. Play Doh, puzzles, blocks and painting will also be available at center time. Christmas crafts will be begun as well.
God’s Word: Story: “An Angel’s Announcement”
Luke 1:5-25, 57-80. This lesson is about the birth of John the Baptist. Memory verse: The Lord is faithful to all His promises. Psalm 145:35.
Music: Christmas songs will be taught Monday and Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
Spanish: Will be taught 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. Monday morning with Ms. Rosa.
Upcoming School Events: This Tuesday, all but Jr.K. will be going to the Crystal Cathedral Christmas program. Bus leaves at 7:45 a.m. for those who have siblings attending the school field trip.
Thanks to all the parents that helped with the Thanksgiving feast. The food was great and they all looked to cute.

Notes from Teacher: This is our week before our Thanksgiving break begins. Friday is a special Thanksgiving Feast the whole school is putting on with the help of parent volunteers. The cost is $3.50 unless your child wants their own lunch. There was an orange paper that went home last week indicating what you chose for your child’s lunch that day.
Books: “The House on the Hill,” “Where’s My Hug,” “A House for Hermit Crab,” “Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep,” poem, “Humpty Dumpty,” and the Thanksgiving story, “Young Squanto.” Flannel story “The Little Red Hen” will be out for them to act out.
Science: We arefinishing up domestic, farm and wild animals. The children also enjoyed hearing animal poems too, and learning that Indian corn popped yellow and white on the inside. In discussion, I told the children the Indian corn is like all God’s children, beautiful together, full of an array of colors, and when popped; we too, are the same on the inside.
Math: Number of the week is 10. We will sing and count using the song, Ten Little Indian Boys and Girls (Indian head dresses too); and using potatoes, to sing and count with the poem “One Potato”, and trace number ten using the wipe on wipe off board.
Letter of the week: (Hh) we will cut and paste word pictures that begin with letter H, trace and handwrite letter H. The children will also design their own Humpty Dumpty figures and learn the traditional poem.
Art: If they have not already made an Indian head dress of feathers they will this week. Hopefully, turkey center pieces of thanks as well. * Please bring in pine cones if you have any.
Large motor: recess play outside if the smoke is not heavy and circle time playing: Hide and seek and Hot Potato. Small motor: Art projects for letter H, Indian head dresses and more Thanksgiving art. Play Doh, puzzles, blocks and painting will also be available to them at center time.
God’s Word: The story of “Daniel in the Lions’ Den.”
Music: We have begun Christmas songs, Monday and Wednesdays mornings.
Spanish: On Monday mornings with Ms. Rosa, they are doing a great job together.
Upcoming School Events: This Friday is our Thanksgiving Feast. Next week is Thanksgiving.

Notes from Teacher: This Wednesday, November 12th, Sammy’s and Charlee’s parents are bringing pizza, juice and cupcakes to celebrate their daughters’ birthday for the whole class. What a treat for us all! Tuesday is our nation’s official Veterans’ Day. I hope you all had a good three day weekend to honor our veteransJ. Come Thursday, a lovely ladies skin care fundraiser will be held at our school at 6:00 p.m. Please come if you can, food will be there too.
Books: “A Promise is a Promise,” “The Bear’s Picnic,” “There’s a Wocket in my Pocket,” “Paddington’s 123,” and “Sam and the Fire Fly.” *this last book finally came in the mail.
Science: Sorting animals and discovering what becomes of Indian corn when heated up; hence, does the corn keep its beautiful array of colors? Last week the children got to crack the corn and guess what color they thought the corn would become when popped.
Math: Number of the week is 9. We will be making patterns of nine and counting numbers and shapes with use of a spinner.
Letter of the week: (Pp) we will cut and paste word pictures that begin with letter P, trace and handwrite letter P. The children will also color in Pilgrim figures; trace their hand for stain glass hands of prayer and string pretend harps for praise like in the story of David.
Large motor:recess play outside and circle games inside to music: pass the ball and ring on a string. For fun, after we have popped our Indian corn, we will act out being “popcorn” to a nursery popcorn song.
Small motor: Art projects to create patriotic pin wheels to honor our veterans. Play Doh, puzzles and pattern making with also be available to them at center time.
God’s Word: The story of “David” with memory verse for the Kindergarten class: “I will sing; I will make music to the Lord” Judges 5:3
Music: As a class, we have begun Christmas songs, Monday and Wednesdays mornings.
Spanish: the children are increasing their vocabulary through group games and performing a rainbow skit song with Ms. Rosa.
Upcoming School Events: Thanksgiving Feast is November 21st. Be sure to select what food your child is going to eat that day, and bring in the $3.50 needed for this special festivity.

Notes from Teacher: On Wednesday, November 12th, Sammy’s and Charlee’s parents are bringing pizza, juice and cupcakes to celebrate their daughters’ birthday that day for the whole class. The children did great with “Dog Gone Good Readers.” Awards go home this week and we begin “Soar into Reading” with SnoopyJ
Books: “Frog and Toad and Friends” for letter (Ff), followed by a friendship salad, “The Fire Cat,” “Sam and the Fire Fly,” and the “The Story of Thanksgiving.” Flannel board story, “The Farmer and Dell.”
Science: Categorizing animals in art, using farm, wild and domestic animals.
Math: Number of the week is 8. We will be pretend frogs, leaping up to 8 lily pads for fun.
Letter of the week: (Ff) We will cut and paste word pictures that begin with letter F, trace and handwrite letter F and create their own Frog lunch bag for fun.
Large motor: recess play outside and circle games inside to music.
Small motor: Art projects to create Indian corn, feather head dress, turkey hand prints and a lunch bag frog; plus, the many uses of blocks, puzzles, play doh in centers.
God’s Word: The story of “Samuel” with memory verse for the Kindergarten class: “The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up.” 1Samuel 3:19. *note, the Lord is with you too.
Music: As a class, we have begun Christmas songs, Monday and Wednesdays.
Spanish: Taught with Miss Rosa on Monday mornings.
Thank You: Thanks to all the parents who got their children costumes and helped with set up and clean up last Friday. Wow, what a great time all of us had celebrating Halloween! The children looked great, and enjoyed eating and dancing as a whole school.

Curriculum
Our Pre-K programs explore these concepts, but are not required to master them before entering Kindergarten. Children learn these concepts at their own pace. Children are taught with hands on materials.
Math: numbers 1 – 10, counting objects to 10, sorting, patterns: AB, AABB, sizes, shapes, matching, same and different, more, less, same. Time: day and night.
Literacy: Exposure to alphabet, letter names and sounds, learn to recognize and spell first name, hold pencil, marker, crayon correctly, repeat simple nursery rhymes and finger plays, direction, left to right. Build new vocabulary, build listening skills, develop fine motor skills, play dough, scissors, writing utensils, legos, etc.
Science: explore science tools: magnets, prisms, magnifying glasses, etc. Natures, gardening, observe insect life, plant growth, and weather and plant life. Cooking activities, basic colors and explore color mixing. Explore the world with the five senses; learn about animals, their homes and the food they eat.
Creative Arts: Painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, etc. use different art materials: crayons, tempera paint, watercolor paint, colored pencils, markers, chalk and clay. Sing songs with movement and dances, use carves and other objects to practice rhythms, dramatize familiar stories, act out movements and sounds of animals.
Social Skills: Practice problem-solving skills in social situations, work in groups or with a partner, sharing, practice using manners: please, thank you, and excuse me.
Jesus Time Listen to Old and New Testament Bible stories, Recognize that God created families to love and take care of one another. Learn about God’s love, listen to stories of the life of Jesus, learn Jesus’ teachings to love God and love others

Mrs. Maxwell
I am Renee Maxwell, the Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten teacher. The children call me Mrs. Maxwell. I grew up in Mission Viejo, CA and graduated from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in Child Development. My passion has always been to teach the joy of learning through nurturance and letting each child know the love of Christ in their day.
This will be my eleventh year teaching. I have had the honor of teaching second grade for seven years at American Lutheran Elementary School in Burbank; and two years, prior, as their computer teacher for the 4th, 5th and 6th graders. However, I started at American Lutheran teaching with the Kindergarten classes and am delighted to be working with the young again here at First Lutheran in Burbank.
My husband and I met at Chico State and raised two children together, who now have gone off to college at the Naval Academy. After a lot of travel supporting them their first academic year, I longed to get back into teaching. I was an active parent, into marching band, water polo, swim, and many camp outs and hikes with the boy scouts. I love the outdoors, hikes and walks with my dog and visiting my family. I am a “doer.” I will be working hard to make each day fun in the classroom and on the yard for your children.
