Notes from the Teacher: Last week the children enjoyed Ground Hog Day, crawling through a tunnel to see their own shadow. This week will be fun with Valentines’ Day parties on Thursday afternoon. The Valentines list will go home today (make one for each child). To make the party go well, I will send home a circled item on what to bring to class. There is no school this Friday and Monday, the 15th.
*Valentine Balloon Grams can be ordered through the 5th and 6th graders, if you are interested.
*Progress report cards go out this week.
*Open House is next week, the 18th and Feb. 20th.
Letter of the week is (V)
Books read: “Frankie’s Valentines” “The Very Noisy Night” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” and “Dr. Seuss ABC.”
Math: We will continue number recognition and counting on each number as we tap on dots like the dice. Eric Carle’s 123 game will be available for play and a chance to sequence the story, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
Small motor: trace letter (V), color, cut and glue word pictures for letter V. Create their own Valentine bag for the Valentine party. They will also, collage together a vase for letter (V); I can’t wait to see what they create! For a fun Valentine gift, the Jr. K. will use fabric ties to finish this project.
Large motor: Run and play outside, using sand and water tables. Take turns riding the new Big Wheel. Indoors, play circle games with musical cds and try playing four corners with the Kindergarteners.
God’s Word: “Jesus Heals a Man,” a great story of good friends and faith, Mark 2:1-12.
Memory verse: “Praise the Lord…who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,” Psalm 103:2-3
Science: For letter of the week (v) we shall have fun with different volumes, using containers and balloons, and compare frozen ice cubes and a frozen glass of water to their melted state of volume/weight.
Spanish: Monday morning with Ms. Rosa, 8:45-9:20.
Music: 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday mornings with Jr. K through 2nd grade.
Please keep in prayer the people of Haiti and those helping them; and also, continued prayers for Emma’s Aunt.

Curriculum
Our Pre-K programs explore these concepts, but are not required to master them before entering Kindergarten. Children learn these concepts at their own pace. Children are taught with hands on materials.
Math: numbers 1 – 10, counting objects to 10, sorting, patterns: AB, AABB, sizes, shapes, matching, same and different, more, less, same. Time: day and night.
Literacy: Exposure to alphabet, letter names and sounds, learn to recognize and spell first name, hold pencil, marker, crayon correctly, repeat simple nursery rhymes and finger plays, direction, left to right. Build new vocabulary, build listening skills, develop fine motor skills, play dough, scissors, writing utensils, legos, etc.
Science: explore science tools: magnets, prisms, magnifying glasses, etc. Natures, gardening, observe insect life, plant growth, and weather and plant life. Cooking activities, basic colors and explore color mixing. Explore the world with the five senses; learn about animals, their homes and the food they eat.
Creative Arts: Painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, etc. use different art materials: crayons, tempera paint, watercolor paint, colored pencils, markers, chalk and clay. Sing songs with movement and dances, use carves and other objects to practice rhythms, dramatize familiar stories, act out movements and sounds of animals.
Social Skills: Practice problem-solving skills in social situations, work in groups or with a partner, sharing, practice using manners: please, thank you, and excuse me.
Jesus Time Listen to Old and New Testament Bible stories, Recognize that God created families to love and take care of one another. Learn about God’s love, listen to stories of the life of Jesus, learn Jesus’ teachings to love God and love others

Mrs. Maxwell
I am Renee Maxwell, the Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten teacher. The children call me Mrs. Maxwell. I grew up in Mission Viejo, CA and graduated from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in Child Development. My passion has always been to teach the joy of learning through nurturance and letting each child know the love of Christ in their day.
This will be my eleventh year teaching. I have had the honor of teaching second grade for seven years at American Lutheran Elementary School in Burbank; and two years, prior, as their computer teacher for the 4th, 5th and 6th graders. However, I started at American Lutheran teaching with the Kindergarten classes and am delighted to be working with the young again here at First Lutheran in Burbank.
My husband and I met at Chico State and raised two children together, who now have gone off to college at the Naval Academy. After a lot of travel supporting them their first academic year, I longed to get back into teaching. I was an active parent, into marching band, water polo, swim, and many camp outs and hikes with the boy scouts. I love the outdoors, hikes and walks with my dog and visiting my family. I am a “doer.” I will be working hard to make each day fun in the classroom and on the yard for your children.
