Notes from the Teacher: It was great to see you all at Shakey’s last Tuesday and at Ashley’s birthday party Sunday. A big thank you goes to Emma’s mom, Melissa, for making all those yummy brownies, and all the help from Anahit and Melissa Cooley for treat sale. From the monies raised, I was able to buy a big wheel and Eric Carl’s 123 counting game. Thank you for making it a success.
I will be sending out progress report cards this following Monday. Open House is February 18th and 20th. See Tosha Larsen if you would like to help with greeting new parents.
· Please continue sending healthy snacks and be careful about peanut butter. We have one student allergic to peanut butter. Thanks.
Letter of the week is (Ee)
Books read: “Elmer,” “An Extraordinary Egg” “Ground Hog Day” “Horton Hears a Who” “and “Dr. Seuss ABC.” “Elmer” is a new book in the stores and has a good message. Come check it out in class.
Math: We are going to have fun with Eric Carl’s 123 game, continue tracing numbers and counting by dots. Create something with 8 dots and play elephant bingo for number recognition.
Small motor: trace letter (Ee), color, cut and glue word pictures for letter E. With watercolors, paint Elmer the elephant by their own design.
Large motor: Run and play outside, using sand and water tables. Take turns riding the new Big Wheel. Indoors, play circle games with musical cds.
God’s Word: “Zacchacus,” this is a great story of how Jesus notices those who make an effort to see him. Zacchacus had few friends, being a tax collector, but Jesus came to his house for a friendly visit.
Luke 19:1-10. For fun, we will do a celery and food color demonstration of how Zacchacus stood out by climbing the tree. Memory verse: “Since God so loved us, we…love one another.” 1 John 4:11
Science: Physical Science on winter continued: the children will explore how ice melts, compare salt water with fresh water and for glaciers; ask how freezing temperatures allow for ice to melt; and discuss the weight of snowpack, follow up with an ice block, pressure wire experiment. Spanish: Monday morning with Ms. Rosa, 8:45-9:20.
Music: 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday mornings with Jr. K through 2nd grade.
Please keep in prayer the people of Haiti and those helping them; and also, continued prayers for Emma’s Aunt.

Curriculum
Our Pre-K programs explore these concepts, but are not required to master them before entering Kindergarten. Children learn these concepts at their own pace. Children are taught with hands on materials.
Math: numbers 1 – 10, counting objects to 10, sorting, patterns: AB, AABB, sizes, shapes, matching, same and different, more, less, same. Time: day and night.
Literacy: Exposure to alphabet, letter names and sounds, learn to recognize and spell first name, hold pencil, marker, crayon correctly, repeat simple nursery rhymes and finger plays, direction, left to right. Build new vocabulary, build listening skills, develop fine motor skills, play dough, scissors, writing utensils, legos, etc.
Science: explore science tools: magnets, prisms, magnifying glasses, etc. Natures, gardening, observe insect life, plant growth, and weather and plant life. Cooking activities, basic colors and explore color mixing. Explore the world with the five senses; learn about animals, their homes and the food they eat.
Creative Arts: Painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, etc. use different art materials: crayons, tempera paint, watercolor paint, colored pencils, markers, chalk and clay. Sing songs with movement and dances, use carves and other objects to practice rhythms, dramatize familiar stories, act out movements and sounds of animals.
Social Skills: Practice problem-solving skills in social situations, work in groups or with a partner, sharing, practice using manners: please, thank you, and excuse me.
Jesus Time Listen to Old and New Testament Bible stories, Recognize that God created families to love and take care of one another. Learn about God’s love, listen to stories of the life of Jesus, learn Jesus’ teachings to love God and love others

Mrs. Maxwell
I am Renee Maxwell, the Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten teacher. The children call me Mrs. Maxwell. I grew up in Mission Viejo, CA and graduated from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in Child Development. My passion has always been to teach the joy of learning through nurturance and letting each child know the love of Christ in their day.
This will be my eleventh year teaching. I have had the honor of teaching second grade for seven years at American Lutheran Elementary School in Burbank; and two years, prior, as their computer teacher for the 4th, 5th and 6th graders. However, I started at American Lutheran teaching with the Kindergarten classes and am delighted to be working with the young again here at First Lutheran in Burbank.
My husband and I met at Chico State and raised two children together, who now have gone off to college at the Naval Academy. After a lot of travel supporting them their first academic year, I longed to get back into teaching. I was an active parent, into marching band, water polo, swim, and many camp outs and hikes with the boy scouts. I love the outdoors, hikes and walks with my dog and visiting my family. I am a “doer.” I will be working hard to make each day fun in the classroom and on the yard for your children.
