Our class uses the Open Court Program. This program encompasses the areas of: Reading, Language Arts and Spelling. Through the use of sound and spelling cards the students are exposed to the phonetic principles of the English language. The units covered are:

Sharing Stories, Kindness, Look Again, Fossils, Courage, Our Country and It’s People.

 

Handwriting: Our second grade handwriting is based on scripture. We will begin with printing instruction and tips as well as a weekly Bible verse for our memory recitals in Religion. We will also review the manuscript formation of letters and how they should be written on the line and spaced out. The instruction of cursive writing begins midway through the school year. Handwriting tips are discussed and demonstrated, with the practice of writing cursive letters and words as well.

 

Mathematics: Our mathematic curriculum is based on an advanced and successful program entitled Saxon Math. This incremental development series allows children to form solid basic concepts in all areas of math. The Saxon philosophy is the building of knowledge through prior learning in which new material is introduced in increments with time provided for practice. Mathematical strands are integrated throughout the year rather than taught in isolated units. Concepts introduced and reviewed include: Calendar (days, weeks, months, years), patterning, weather graphing, money, clock, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, weights, measurements, geometric shapes, thermometer, symmetrical and congruent shapes, angles, balance, number lines, and numbering.

 

Science: In the second grade science curriculum, we study the world around us. This is done through a series of 4 modules. In each module learning occurs through reading activities, science experiments, questions and answers and visual experiences. The four module titles are: A. Living Things, B. Changes Over Time, C. Making Things Move, and D. The Earth and Sky.

 

Social Studies: We learn about the world around us in Second Grade. This program gives insights into their communities and helps them make connections to the larger world. A variety of program formats are used to explore the geographical, social, and economic aspects of their world. Literature, biographies and lessons about real families introduce young learners to people and events in other times and places.

 

Physical Education: The focus of our second grade P.E. program is to develop coordination through the exercising of both large and small muscles. Team play is also an important aspect of second grade P.E, taking turns and a knowledge of rules and sportsmanship are taught through organized activities such as kickball, foursquare, handball, jump rope, circle games and relays.

 

Computer Literacy: Typing tutor, keyboard familiarization and educational computer games.

 

Faith Studies: The second grade curriculum focuses on three main themes:

1. God and Me; based on our relationship with God.

2. God, Me and Others; effective ways to relate to other people around us, and

3. God, Me, and My World; how our relationship with God affects all that we do.

 

Bible stories of Christ's birth, death and resurrection are taught. We learn of our relationship to God through plan of salvation, and that this in turn affects our relationships with other people and the world at large.
